Our History

A little about our history ...

BEGINNINGS

Fareham Philharmonic Society was founded in 1898 by Capt. Eugene Spinney, and aimed to “foster public knowledge and the appreciation of classical music by public performance” … and many of us are here because of that love of classic choral music.

The choir developed from a group of musically like-minded friends who formed the Fareham Philharmonic Society, with both orchestral and choral members, and local events led to a regular concert programme with an accompanying Fareham Philharmonic Orchestra.

Over the years, the relative sizes and fortunes of the two sections have varied, and today we have a strong choir but no permanent orchestra. However, we do have a strong nucleus of local players who regularly support us in major concerts.

It’s a tribute to Capt. Spinney’s initial vision that the choir has flourished until the present day, and also a tribute to our most recent Committee who guided us through the Covid Zoom Rehearsals (when we desperately needed a boost!) and saw us safely out the other side!

LOCKDOWN 2020

During the pandemic, like all choirs everywhere, we wanted to carry on singing together, but could not meet in person.

Our then-secretary, Susan Burt, rapidly upgraded herself into a Zoom expert, allowing us not only to meet and sing together, but even to continue with our mid-rehearsal chats, while Andrew, Brian and Jonathan made sure we didn't get too rusty!

It was such a relief in July 2021 when we were at last able to get together in person again, albeit outdoors, and very well-spaced - somewhat to the bemusement of the local dog walkers and passers-by!
